motherhood: the #1 most overlooked job

I thought hard about what I wanted for Mother’s Day when my family asked.

I said my wish was to have more time in a day. Time to clean the piles accumulating in my apartment.

But I got something more. After a nice brunch, I was surprised by my 3 kids with a fully decked out ‘in-home” spa.

One daughter was my facialist, the other was my masseuse.

My 11-year-old Jack was the bell-boy clanking the Buddhist chimes to calm me.

I laughed so hard, and then it worked.

I fell into the deepest state of calm I’ve felt in a long time.

I've been feeling exponentially pulled lately by the demands of building a business, but also doing the stay-at-home-mom thing — which is a full time job that needs its place on every resume, i.e. “Mother/Executive of Household."

Then I thought, how is “mother” actually defined by the ol’ Merriam-Webster?

I found these 3 profound sentences:

  • A mother can be selfless yet recognizes that she needs “me time” to take care of her family.
  • Moms teach their children right from wrong even when it is hard.
  • They are there for their kids when they need them most, but then let them soar on their own when they are ready.

Do you see?

...she needs ‘me time’ to take care of her family

.... it’s hard

...she lets them soar.

So take the time. Remember it’s hard. And let the small stuff go since one day they will soar.

And if you’re not a mom, don’t wait until next year to pay respects to your mother, or mother friend, or a mother-to-be, or a grandmother, or Mother Earth (there’s a reason why we call this planet MOTHER).

In the meantime, know I'm grateful for you for being here in my world, and that I am wishing you the calm and joy of your own in-home spa!

With fierce love,
Alison
